Signs, symptoms and treatment

The main diagnostic signs and symptoms include:

  • An acute attack of arthritis of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe (most common) in which there is a sharp cutting/burning pain in the affected joint on the legs, the skin over the joint becomes red and hot to the touch, and joint swelling. Any touch to it causes severe pain, which can last from 2-3 hours to 2-3 days. Most common "gout toe", but much less may be affected and large fingers, elbow, knee, ankle joints.
  • The presence of specific gouty nodes predominantly on the extensor surfaces of the thighs, over the joints of the foot, ankle and Achilles tendon.
  • Elevated levels of uric acid in the blood (based on an improper diet or renal disease).

The treatment of the disease an integrated and essential component of the treatment process is the therapy. Clinical nutrition involves reducing the energy value of the diet (usually in gout patients have an increased body weight), limitation of intake of exogenous purines and fats that decrease excretion of uric acid by the kidneys.

Main diet for gout of the feet — diet-Table No. 6 for normalization of exchange of purines (nitrogen-containing organic compounds) and reduction of uric acid and salts that are produced during the metabolism of purines, and the shift of the alkaline reaction of urine. It is in an alkaline environment increases the solubility of urate, accelerating the excretion of uric acid and, thus, disrupted the process of their education.

The energy value of the therapeutic diet is around 2700-2800 Calories. The physiologically complete diet with a slight decrease in the diet protein to 70-80 grams of fat, mostly refractory to 80-90 g. in the absence of obesity the carbohydrate content is about 400 g. free liquid — 2 l

Diet in gout. The table provides strict restriction/prohibition of foods rich in purine bases and oxalic acid with a slight restriction of sodium chloride (10 g/day). When one introduces the products that have alkalizing effect (vegetables/fruits, milk). For orientation of patients developed a special table indicating the contents in foods of purine bases.

Special requirements to the food products, except meat processing, no. To reduce the content of purines in the dish, the meat is prepared exclusively by a method of cooking. In this case, the meat is pre-cooked briefly for 10-15 minutes, then the broth is drained and continues its further cooking. Outside the period of exacerbation cold fish dishes can be included in the menu 2-3 times in a week, and the amount of meat/fish per day should not exceed 150 g. Food for gout fractional, 5 fold, in between meals — drink plenty of liquids.

Diet for treating gout involves the unloading days (once a week) — cottage cheese-yogurt – 400 g low-fat cottage cheese and 1 liter of kefir; fruit up to 1.5 kg are allowed vegetables/fruits, with an increase during this period fluid intake to 3 liters (in the absence of contraindications).

Diet for gout during an exacerbation requires a more thorough formation of the diet. In acute gout from your diet is necessary to completely eliminate all meat and fish products. Optimal nutrition during this period is a vegetarian diet that includes dairy and vegetable soups, liquid porridges, dairy products, broths, vegetables and fruits, fruit juices, herbal teas. The exacerbation of the disease requires the holding of more frequent fasting days (optimally every other day). This period shows an increase in the consumption of alkaline mineral waters.

  • Normalizes metabolism.
  • Sometimes patients have a hard time with fasting days.

Reviews nutritionists

Many patients underestimate the proper diet for gout. Meanwhile, a strict diet in combination with supplementation is able to significantly slow the pace of development of destruction of bone and cartilage tissue, prevent the formation of knots and to preserve the function of the musculoskeletal system.

Some patients practiced fasting, especially during exacerbation. This is not necessary, because fasting dramatically increases the level of uric acid, which is highly undesirable. Only fasting days.
